Owning a printer is not unusual to see as it was some fifteen to twenty years ago.
The boons of modern technology have enabled people to print their own essays, personals documents or even creative writings at home. All you have to do is to have a fully functioning computer and a printer attached to it. Many journalists, writers, accountants and even students have started to consider a printer as their indispensable part of everyday life.
But what if you want to print something completely different than an ordinary poem written on a piece of paper? What if you need to hand out a set of invitations for a birthday party or a wedding for your friends and family? If you want to establish a thriving business or even enhance your reputation, you will definitely need a creatively designed and nicely printed visit card. You can do all these things from your home with printer for cardstock.
Get to know your printer and the paper stock it uses
If you want to do all the things we mentioned above, you will need to carefully choose the right weight of the paper that you are going to use. After all, you don’t want to look cheap and unprofessional.
Cardstock is a thick, durable and flexible form of paperboard that is used for making invitations, greeting cards, visit cards, magazine covers or even playing cards.
In order to print all of these things that we mentioned above, you will need to use a cardstock printer.
Before you decide to say “I will buy whatever printer I find first”, make sure to know a few things.
You need to know more about cardstock printing because with the right printer by your side you can do wonders. You can make your prints to look good and elegant. It will be made from the top-notch material so it will last longer, preserving its original look for a long time.
Cardstock is printed in different sizes
There are different sizes of paper that you are going to use when you start tinkering with the printer. Therefore make sure to know the dimensions of the material that you are going to print. Most printers are adjusted to default settings to support a regular 8.5 inches wide by 11.75 inches. If you want to change the size of the paper that you want to print, make sure to check if your printer can process it first. The cardstock sizes that you will probably use in your work include 6 x 6 inches, 8x 8 inches, 8.5 x 11 inches and 12 x 12 inches. When you decide to buy a new cardstock printer, you better check if it is able to print all of these sizes.
Do not overburden your printer with heavy material
Many people say that regular printers that they use at home can process thicker forms of paper. Well, these people are clearly misinformed and if you heed their advice and force a cardstock upon your regular printer you will do more damage than good.
Still, they are not completely wrong. Some lighter versions of cardstock (like 65lb) could be printed by newer models of printers, and there are even some “regular” printers that could process a 165lb card stock, but these are very expensive, high-end machines that cost a lot.
Since we have learned that printing with cardstock is not as easy as looks, now we need to talk about the machine that you are going to choose. In order to avoid paper jams and unnecessary damage, you will need to make sure that you are properly equipped to work with cardstock. Cardstock uses more toner and ink than regular paper; therefore you will need a device that is specifically designed to work with it.
Cardstock printer comes in two varieties, inkjet and laser printers. Both of these are designed to process cardstock, yet their differences are many. There are two types of cardstock printers: Inkjet and Laser printers
Inkjet printers are much easier to find and purchase and these devices are more reliable than their laser counterparts. The problem is, inkjet printers cannot print images to look sharp as laser printer can. When it comes to printing images, especially those with a smaller resolution, a laser printer is the one that could do the job.
Still, the main downside of these devices is that most of these printers simply aren’t fit to work with heavy cardstock (heavier than 65 lbs). There are some, but these are much more expensive than other machines of this type.
Laser or Inkjet printer for cardstock?
If you are about to print lots of material that doesn’t require being in high resolution, you may opt for all-in-one cardstock inkjet printer. Suited for color printing, scanning, copying and even faxing, this machine will cover all of your needs, but most importantly it will last long. You will need to use the ink regularly so make sure that you have some reserves in store.
On the other hand, if you are a perfectionist who doesn’t accept any form of misshape or fail, you may think about laser cardstock printer. Your prints will be beautiful and clear as a day, but you must be very careful when you use this device. It requires careful maintaining and you need to avoid any risks while you use it.
What are the best printers that you can choose?
As a person who has spent a long time working in a printing industry, I can tell you that it depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are all about opening private printing industry that will deal will massive orders, you will need a completely different machine from someone who wants to have a reliable cardstock printer installed in his home. Although there are many excellent printers that might suit you, it would be better if I give you some guidelines that you might remember when you decide to buy one of these machines:
- Make sure that the printer you want can print the size of paper that you need
- A reliable printer does not cause problems with your software or network
